Safari Highlight : Addis Ababa / Wolliso / Bonga / Addis Ababa

We explore the unknown Western part of Ethiopia which has the last rain forests and famous for the Coffee Arabica. You will do some Trekking or horseback at Wenchi Crater Lake in stunning nature, visit the palace of the former Kafa king Ras Abba Jifar II in Jimma, Rain forest of Kafa biosphere with rich flora and fauna, hot springs, stunning waterfalls, visit the Alem Gonna wetlands, visit a local projects and meet with a spiritual leader of the Kafa region.

 

5 Days 4 Nights wetlands and waterfalls tour itinerary

Day 1: Wolliso (Wenchi Crater Lake)

Morning drive from Addis Ababa for some 185 kms (2 hrs) to Wolliso to arrive at the Wenchi Crater Lake located towards the North. After lunch, we shall enjoy a walk or a horse ride through stunning nature. From the rim of the crater we descent into a beautiful valley with abundant rivers. We may also cross the lake in a traditional boat. In the late afternoon, we return to Wolliso. Dinner and overnight at Negash Resort (www.negashresort.com) or similar in Wolliso

Day 2: Jimma / Bonga (345 km)

After breakfast, drive for some 345 kms west-ward via Jimma to Bonga. On the way, we will visit the palace of the former Kafa king Ras Abba Jifar II overlooking the town and the adjacent coffee forests. The palace reflects the past coffee era when the trade gave the king a lot of wealth and power. The region remained independent from the Ethiopian empire until 1930. Proceed to Bonga, in the heart of the Kafa region and surrounded by fantastic mountainous rain forest in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at KDA Guesthouse or similar in Bonga

Day 3: Full Day in the Bonga Region

Early morning visit to the Alem Gonna wetland, home to many bird species and De Brazza monkeys. We walk through the wetland during sunrise and enjoy our picnic breakfast here. After a short stop in Bonga, we will take a walk (1 hour) to the Barta waterfall. The waterfall is over 70 m high surrounded by basalt walls in the middle of the rain forest. On our way back, we will stop at the house of Mirutse, a local bee-keeper producing his own organic forest honey. He will give us some interesting information on bee-keeping and local plants. If possible, we may have another walk to the hot

Day 4: Excursion to Elevated Areas of the Kafa Region

After early breakfast, we shall depart to explore some elevated areas of the Kafa biosphere conservation area. The

Village of Boka lies at an altitude of approx. 3.000 m. Here bamboo grows and is used by the farmers for the construction and fencing of their houses. An unknown number of lions is said to live here in the nearby bamboo forests. We will stop at one of the neat bamboo villages and listen to the stories of a spiritual leader about the king of the animals and more. Dinner and Overnight at KDA Guesthouse or similar in Bonga

Day 5: Addis Ababa

After early breakfast, we drive for some 455 kms (8 hrs) back to Addis Ababa.
