Dar es Salaam Zoo is one of the largest zoos in East African with a variety of animals including lions, antelopes, crocodiles, hyenas, leopards and zebras. Explore the Nguva river and see different bird species. Ride on camel or horse back while interacting with the monkeys. The zoo also has a swimming pool for children and teenagers below the age of 15 years. Although Dodoma is the true capital city, Dar es Salaam is the main central hub for international flights and the city that most visitors will pass through.  It is the starting point for the majority of Tanzanian southern safaris and also the connecting hub for Zanzibar and the mainland coast hideaways.

Dar es Salaam is a coastal capital in the process of reinventing itself and it is emerging as an enjoyable cosmopolitan city that offers a lot to enjoy – even fashion, art, music and films. At heart, Dar es Salaam remains a bustling Swahili market town. It is however, a center of trade and commerce which attracts ambitious Africans from all of Tanzania and its neighboring countries as well as international communities who come to do business in this port. This is Tanzania’s communication hub and a world apart from the lifestyle of the rural majority.

In Arabic, Dar es Salaam means “Abode of peace” and it is popularly known as Dar. With it boasting the second largest port in East Africa and being a gateway to Tanzania through the Julius Nyerere International Airport, it is a popular transit town to most of Tanzania’s touristic destinations. Get around the city using minibuses (dala dala), buses or trains. Restaurants in Dar es Salaam offer delicious traditional and intercontinental dishes.
